The European delegation of MMM has been involved from January 2012 to January 2015, in a European research project, funded by the Seventh Framework Programme of the EU.  The overall objective of this project was to research the impact of obesity during pregnancy on the health of their children.

DORIAN stands for: "Developmental ORIgins of healthy and unhealthy AgeiNg: the role of maternal obesity".

The project brought together 10 partners in 6 countries. It was coordinated by the Institute of Clinical Physiology-CNR, Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche in Pisa, Italy. (Dr. Patricia Iozzo)

This multidisciplinary project aimed to generate a better understanding of the basic mechanisms of early life development and ageing, with the aim of improving health and quality of life during the entire life course. In particular, the Consortium of DORIAN investigated and analysed the impacts of maternal obesity on the process of ageing, and its effects on children throughout their lives.

The project concludes that targeted strategies should be developed to prevent obesity in girls and in women of child bearing age, due to the long lasting negative consequences of maternal obesity for both mothers and their children: greater likeilhood to develop cardiovascular, crebrovascular diseases or type II diabetes during adulthood for children born from overweight mothers during their late pregnancy.
